Power Steering Problems: Diagnosis Assist 200 1982

Hi Guys,

I needed some advice concerning the slow and (up until recently) moderate deterioration in my 1982 242's steering capability (total miles = 275k).

First let me outline the present mechanical state of the 242's front end. About four years ago a new aftermarket steering rack was installed (which included tie rods and ends, etc.). Within the last 4 years this vehicle has also had ne= ball joints, struts, strut mounts, and for some time IPD HD sway bars. The pulley belts all have less than 25 k on them.

The power steering pump/unit is a used part that was installed many miles and years ago and until recently has provided good service. The unit does not appear to leak/use fluid. I had IPD polyethylene bushings installed in this steering unit about 2 months ago, although the bushings for the alternator will have to be replaced because of an intermittent squeal from the pulley drive belts. The front tires are in good condition and wearing evenly. The vehicle tracks straight, which is to say that it does not appear to drift to the right or the left on its own.

This history and other symptoms suggest something amiss with the power steering pump/unit or belt, but I know little about how this unit works except to provide a "power assist" when the driver turns the steering wheel. In any case, when turning the steering wheel the response is sluggish. This occurs when turning either right or left. Further, the steering wheel (since yesterday) will sometimes stay slightly out of alignment on both the right or left side when the car is traveling in a straight line down the road. The longer the car is on the road the worse all of these symptoms get.

Without your comments I am assuming it is probably the power steering unit or drive belt. If it is ultimately the power steering pump/unit I wonder how best to proceed with replacing it? If memory serves the previous unit was out of a bone yard and it provided good service for years. However, anything that we can find that is used at this point in history is probably pretty worn (high mileage). Does this suggest spending the extra bucks on a remanufactured or(gasp) a new unit? Thanks for your thoughts on diagnosis as well as your advice on the parts thing.

Regards, David
