Installing new Distributor in '88 740 700 1988

Hi, I'm on the last leg of my engine replacement and I have a new distributor to install. I have marked the position of the old distributor so I will have a guage for positioning the new one. Is there any way I can screw this up? Does the engine have to be set to TDC? Any other caveats? Thanks
