HELP
When starting my '66 122 to drive home from work, after having worked fine on the way to work & at lunch, it emitted a terrible CLANG CLANG CLANG noise from the engine - it sounded like someone hitting the exhasut manifold with a hammer, but it kept running, I had to get home & the noise stopped after 2-3 minutes of low speed driving. But it didn't have it's usual zip.
Once home, I determined that the #3 cylinder was dead by pulling spark plug wires. I took out the spark plug & it was phsyically damamged. I stuck a small magnet in the cylinder & pulled out very small pieces of metallic shavings. Ran a compression test & #1,2&4 all read 165psi but #3 is 90psi.
What has probably happened ?? Could a ring have disintegrated ? a valve break-off ?? could something have gotten in through the valve ?
Will I need to do a complete rebuild (rings & bore) or might I be able to get by just rebuild the head (valves & guides?)
