760 tach began twitching 700 1995

any ideas why the tach in my 760 gle would start twitching, (the engine seems to be running normal) but the guage shows changes in rpm's or allmost 500 some times, and some times as few as 50, but as fast is it some times shows a jump of 500 rpm's the car should sudenly lurch forward (i'd think) and it dosen't, i'm becomeing very concerned that it might leave me dead in the water out some 40+ miles from the nearest house and out of range of any sort of help
