I am rebuilding my son's '77 245. I pulled the bell housing to see what shape the input shaft was in (the pilot bearing was shot), and although it was fine, the countershaft front bearing has probably 1/4" lateral endplay. It also clunks somewhere in the bowels of the transmission, but that could just be due to the endplay. It looks like there is the inner race, needle bearing ends (or worn ball bearings), a needle holder riding mid needle diameter, and no separate race (just machined into the transmission). I assume there is a separate race or this transmission just might be scrap iron.
Questions are, (1) is there something I don't know (first Volvo) that makes this not the dire problem it seems? (2) Can I pull it from the front or do I have to tear down the transmission? (3) What is the type and size of the bearing? (4) Does anyone sell a M41(?) rebuild kit.
What problems do I look for in the overdrive unit?
Thanks,
mwc
