the only way to run the car without grinding up the starter pinion is to flick the key back to off, and quickly back to the "II" position. then the starter solenoid disengages the pinion fully.
now, since i replaced the old starter (it's gears pretty well chewed up already) and found that the problem persisted, i replaced the ignition switch as well, thinking that had to be it.
now i don't understand what's going on. the starter does not switch on when the key goes from off to II, so why won't it turn off at that position when going back from START?
could this be a wiring problem?
