Right, here is the deal.
Bought the car (B230FT/M46, 272k miles) a few months ago and the engine smoked enormous amounts, mostly at lower revs. Trying to figure out what it was, I removed all hoses between airbox and turbo and intercooler and turbo, they were oil filled and so was the airbox. Cleaning this out helped a lot, now what I was then told was that here was an old turbo with seals letting oil through and that I shoudl see a high oil consumption. I do not have this. The engine has now had a major service with spark plugs, HT leads, oil, oilfilter, dizzy cap, rotor and belts. Now the engine does not smoke at start up, smokes a fair amount, but less than before, when getting hotter and this only from idle (steadily at 800 rpm) to around 2000-2500 rpm, above that there is very little smoke indeed. The exhausts do smell badly and sometimes there is a little bit of fuel on the ground by the exhaust end. What are we talking about here, why this smoke and rich running?
