Cold Transmission Issues 700 1988

Greetings from Cleveland. I'm new to the 700 forum since I've been a 240 and 122 owner since they were steam-powered. I have the opportunity of purchasing a very nice 740T (150K, body straight-no rust, manual transmission, needs tires, about $3200) that the owner doesn't really want to get rid of, but the wife wants a Jeep. He mentioned that the transmission, when cold, occasionally "pops out" of fifth gear, but when the car is warmed up there's no problem. Is this endemic to the 700 series, or indicative of a serious general transmission problem? Is it a quick fix, or am I looking at a rebuild? Anyone with experience with this problem...your help is appreciated.
