poor engine performance 700 1990

I recently bought a high milage(200k+ miles), 1990 740gl wagon. Through a series of goofs (running out of gas),I had to replace the fuel pump. Since then,the car is very difficult to accelerate from a dead stop, does not idle long, and the exhaust smells very rich. It acts as if the engine is severely retarded. Compression across all cylinders is 180/195 psi. Prior to installing the fuel pump, performance and gas milage was great.Any help will be greatly appreciated.
