Inoperable gages and lights 700 1985

I have just purchased a 1985 740 GLE sedan with 37,500 original miles. It unfortunately, has a number of problems. The first one I want to tackle is that the gas gage, temp gage, tach, and all the idiot lights except the seat belt light are not working. The former owner had taken it to the dealer, and they wanted to replace the engine wiring harness. Upon examination, the harness doesn't look that bad. Where else should I look?
