Hello Volvo people!
I have a 1988 740 GLE wagon w/o turbo which has a 172,000 miles on it. It runs fine, but the steering is very-moderately stiff! Upon driving on the highway the car would be in this same mode. In addition it would be begin to sway back and forth. Other than the power steering pump possibly being low on ATF, what else might it be? I did not hear any knocking and or banging underneath the frontend, also the car does not shake or anything. It just sways back and forth and must be driven with 2 hands at the 9 & 3 o'clock positions, in order for me to maintain some stability/control. When i apply the brakes it does not swing left or right. What are the most common signs of total power steering pump failure and or causes for this specific type of problem? Would spraying and or replacing the drive belt help? If it is the pump are they very expensive and or difficult to install/remove? All suggestions are welcomed!
Best Regards!
