New struts clunkin' 200 1987

1987 240 Sedan

Ok. I just put new struts in for the first time, now, on one side, there's a bit of clunking going on. When I check it by hand (rock the car from under the fender), I notice that if I pull up with some good force (simulating the wheel going down), I see the top of the strut tower (the black piece that is bolted to the underside of the car body with the three studs), has some play in it, thus the clunking noise.

I tightened everything to specs, and Ive even disassembled this side twice, still to no avail. Should I have replaced these top pieces with the struts, visually they seem ok.

Lucky for me this has been a fun learning experience..AHHHHH...hope I dont have to tear down for number 3.
