HELP LOCATING WHINE

I have a whine that appears when the car idles. I have stuck my head in the engine compartment trying to figure out where it is coming from, but to no avail. Is there a good trick to pinning down the location? I have read about using soap to determine if the belts are whining - How do I go about doing that? I couldn't find it in the FAQ.

From what I can tell, a transmission whine is more pronounced when under load. Mine disappears when I give it gas.

Any other ideas on what might be causing it?

Thanks,
Sam
