'95 960 aftermarket head unit install question 900 1995

I'm trying to replace the SC-811 head unit in my 960 with an Eclipse unit. I got the install kit from crutchfield. I am a little confused about how to hook up the unit, as I've been told I need to bypass the factory amp. I've read everything I could find on this board and others, but I'm still confused. Will I fry the amp if I just plug my head unit into the dash wires? Do I need to run the speaker outputs from the head unit all the way down to the amp and hook up to the speaker wires coming out of it? Any help is greatly appreciated!
