Slow OD engagement when cold 200 1981

My 245 GLT has the M46 w/OD and it is slow to engage when cold. This wasnt to bad when it was 90F, it only took a mile or so. But now that it is 45F and raining, it takes 5-6 miles to warm up. Also, after stop and go driving I need to be back up to speed for awhile before it will engage. Some thing else, when it first engages, it will disengage like an auto kickdown shift if you try to accelerate. This doesnt sound normal, do I live with it? Or were do I look to find the problem?
