A recent post by a brickboarder asked if it was okay to jack the front end on the crossmember. I was wondering if one could jack the car on the two rear support arms. I think they're called that--they are next to the rear wheels and have the springs located above them. The reason I ask is not because I'm going to jack my car, but more on what I experienced recently when my baby was fitted with new shoes. The tire person drives my car up this ramp lift. I'm thinking how the heck is he going to change my tires with all wheels touching the ramp. Well, it turns out there are two jack lifts (front and rear) that are between the two ramps. I've never seen this kind of hoist before at a shop. Anyhow, he makes adjustments to the four contact points so that they will be positioned under the chassis to lift my car. The rear jack is positioned under the rear axle, and the two contact points are placed under each of the support arms to lift my car from the rear. I know you can jack the rear on the middle of the axle. Can one also jack the car on the support arms of the suspension? I guess I'm just so used to understanding that the only areas to jack a car are on the "jacking points" indicated by the manual--usually on a visible beam of thick metal of the chassis.
