Harmonic Balancer 700 1987

I have a 1987 740 GLE with 150K+ miles. The last month or so I have noticed a noise whenever I press the accelerator. A friend of mine whom I trust checked it out & said I need a Harmonic Balancer, that the belt or chain? near the motor was worn & that was where the noise was coming from. Can anyone give me an approximate cost to replace, by a mechanic & is it dangerous to drive like this & how immediate does this need to be done....thanks!
