245 overcharging, why? 200

My '84 245 volt gauge shows my car charging in the red for about 10-15 minutes after I start it up. I have notices the + on the battery keeps getting corrosion on it after I keep cleaning it off every 2 months or so. What causes this? Can I fix it or do I not need to?
I just replaced the alternator (w/regulator) less than a year ago.

Thanks bricksters for you help,
Chuck
