air temperture sensor fault 700 1991

I have a performance problem with a 91 740 non turbo (poor fuel economy, sooty tail pipe) and I am getting a "air temperature sensor" fault code. If I understand, this is used in Regina systems in place of the AMM in the intake hose to the throttle body. Is this most likely just a bad connection or do these units fail that often? Anyone know a source other than my local dealer, John Q Ripoff? Just looking through a number of on line sites, I don't see this component listed annywhere. Many thanks!
