Hello Brickers.
I need help with a problem in my auto transmission.
The problem started about 6 months ago. The overdrive quit working.
Recently I obtained a good relay, solenoid and "O" rings. I also re-soldered the relay terminals and bench-tested the solenoid. This past Saturday I decided to tackle the problem so I removed the old solenoid only to find that a previous owner had cut a slot in the solenoid to allow the trans fluid to flow around the solenoid reguardless of whether the solenoid was open or closed.
Well I replaced the solenoid anyway. I also had to replace the white wire that comes from the relay to the solenoid because it was fried in several places. The solenoid is working now.
But I still do not have overdrive.....but I have realized something.
When I let off of the throttle at high speeds the trans is shifting to fourth. I know this because I can turn the OD switch off on decel at high speeds and it will downshift to third. The second that I tip into the throttle....Im back in third gear. It will not go to fourth. (I do not have a tach.)
The car has 165K mi. but it runs great.
I am an ex auto tech and now I work on medical equipment so I can find my a@#
with both hands.
Any advice will be appreciated.
