Power steering noise 700

My 1989 740gle makes a moaning noise when I turn the steering wheel. It is more noticable when at low RPMs. When the RPMs are higher the m=noise is still there but not a loud. What is the cause of this noise? Is it difficult to fix? Is it a warning of some catastophic steering failure or can I keep driving and turn the stereo up?
