Bad alternator or bad engine harness? 200 1985

My 240 crapped out on Thanksgiving Day, and all signs pointed to a bad alternator - no juice, connections good, low charge coming into battery. I ordered a rebuild on ebay, then trolled the internet for installation tips. I discovered info on the infamous "deteriorating engine wiring harness" in the '85 model. Now I need to know if it is indeed a problem with my alternator or if it is the engine harness. I have been able to determine that the ignition harness is a replacement, but I can't figure out if the engine harness is OEM or not. All the cables look decent, except for a badly frayed one down by the oil filter that has a serial number of T1348644-1. Of course, I cannot identify this serial number anywhere on the internet. The attached image is of the bad wire.
Can anybody supply a surefire way to determine if the problem is th ealternator or the harness? Hopefully, it is the alternator, and I can stick it in and get back on the road tomorrow. Thanx!
