Breather box oil return hose 200 1981

1981 non-turbo 4 cylinder 242. I've been working on getting the clogged breather box out and now it's finally on the workbench. And no broken knuckles. I really appreciate the good advice I got along the way. Now I just need to decide whether to clean all the crud off the inside of the oil return hose before installing the new oil separator. I want this thing to breathe when I'm done. I know that some much more accomplished mechanics than I have cleaned out the breather box while it's on the engine by pouring cleaner through it and letting it wash though the pan and out the oil drain hole or helping it along with compressed air. I'm thinking of cleaning out the drain hose with a brush of some kind and pulling as much of the crud out the top as I can, then draining the engine oil and pouring a couple quarts of 10wt oil or some kind of crankcase cleaner down through the breather box oil return hose and letting it all drain out the oil drain hole. (I don't have compressed air to push it through.) From what I gather, and from looking at the picture on 253-2 in the Bentley Manual, this should work and not cause any problems clogging screens or whatever in the oil pan, etc. Is it this clear cut, or is there something else I should know? Does this sound like a reasonable approach or have I gone nuts from spending five days of my spare time removing the oil separator?
