Dead Ignition Switch Key Mechanism? 200 1981

About two hours ago my son called from along I-81 between Binghamton and Scranton (on his way home for college Xmas break) with a dead car. My wife took messages (before I got home from work) and got him to call AAA. Anyway, he called a moment ago and said that the problem was that the key had refused to go into the ignition switch, but the AAA tow truck operator somehow rammed the key in (or something along those lines) and gotten the switch to turn. He told my son not to turn the motor off until he got all the way home (Philly suburbs). Hmmmm...

So...what will I be facing this weekend? How hard is it to remove the switch/key/lock/steering column assembly in order to replace the lock? Will that pressed steel member with the stupid sheer bolts need to come off? Am I looking at a new lock tumbler or can these things be repaired? I'll attack Bentley later on today, but any wisdom from experienced Brickheads who have been down this road would be very much appreciated.

As always, TIA.

Rob Kuhlman
