Buying a 940 vs. 960 900

Any opinions on 940s versus 960s? I have an 87 740GLE wagon, and I want to buy a mid 90s 940 or 960. But, I'm spoiled by mileage. I get 28 on the road, 21 in town (manual trans), and that's with the wife and two kids. How do the 940s and 960s do in the mileage department? And, I know next to nothing about the six-cylinder engine in the 960. What's its reputation? Many thanks in advance to any and all who respond.
