What is the purpose of the heater control valve? 700

Today, for thr second time in 3 months, my heater control valve blew. I replaced it with a long hose that runs from the head directly to the outlet for the heater core. I noticed that this doesn't effect my temperature inside. When i slide the heat to high: its hot. When i slide it to cold: its cold. What does the heater control valve do? Do i really even need one?
