Possible sudden loss of headlights? 200 1992

Hmmmmmm. My 1992 wagon is set up so the headlights go off when you turn off the ignition.

This means there must be a headlight relay, yes? They wouldn't run all that juice through the ignition switch.

If there is a relay, it can fail.

Does this relay ever go out with no warning (like my fuel pump relay did once, at night, in the rain and 50-mph wind, on the freeway, 1500 miles from home)?

I sure would hate to lose my headlights on certain roads and bridges I've been on.

Any ideas, other than simply replacing the relay every x miles?
