fuel pump and relay functionality - 240 sedan '89 200

Volvo 1989 240 DL sadan B230F 130K miles

I am having problems with hot restarts... I would like to know more about the functionality of the in-tank pre-pump vs. the main pump.

What is the job of the pre-pump?

Is the fuel pressure regulator supposed to maintain all fuel pressure to the fuel rail feeding the injectors?

Are any of the pumps supposed to 'prime' the fuel line when the key is switch ON before cranking the car? I can't here anything...

Does the pre-pump run all the time, as well as the main pump?

Does the fuel pump relay switch ON the pre-pump when ignition is ON and then the main pump when engine is cranked (two relays in the relay pack)?

After stopping the engine (hot) and going back 20 minutes later, I removed the rubber fuel hose to the back of the fpr (aiming to the firewall) and some fuel oozed out, then stopped. Is this the return line going back to the tank? Is this indicative of a leaky pressure regulator, and hence loosing the fuel pressure to start the engine, requiring those 10+ cranks or so I need?

Absolutely no drivability problems after the engine starts up...

Thanks,
Greg Mustang
