Rear defroster/3rd break light wire 200 1993

Has anyone else had a problem with the wires that feed the rear defroster and the third break light? The wires are exposed slightly as they come through the hinge and through the years of bending every time the door opens the insulation has worn away and the wires are begining to sever. I can see I have to pull the headliner to access the wires, but I am not exactly sure how to do it.
