Steering Gearbox Clunk - Need Help 200 1981

1981 sedan. I'm getting a clunk when the left front wheel goes over bumps. I've been under the front end three times with stethoscope in hand and ears, and a good light. I listened and watched all the tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings, anti-roll bar connections, etc. The noise seemed to be coming from the steering gearbox as my wife and daughter turned the steering wheel back and forth. So I released the boot on the driver's side and shoved it out of the way. Watching the bar that disappears into the steering box I can see movement every time I hear the clunk. Lateral movement, perpendicular to the movement of the bar going in and out of the steering box. Grabbing the same bar with my hand, I can feel movement every time I see and hear it. Grabbing the bar and pulling and pushing on it toward the front and rear bumpers I can feel play when nobody is even touching the steering wheel. Please tell me all I have to do is add grease or adjust something to fix this slop in the system. Actually, please tell me anything that might help me solve this problem.
