sm. clock and tailgate?? 200 1987

i have a 1987 245 and just swapped the big clock for a tachometer and a small clock. tach works great and install was a breeze thanks to the archives here. the small clock, however, only works intermitently. when the car is on, clock sort of keeps time. it seems to keep running for five or so hours after i turn the car off. my old big clock ran about the same way. any usual connections or grounds i could check that might be the cause of this? (clock checks out ok)

it would also be nice to see the clock at night but it appears that it is not illuminated. is this so?

secondly, regarding my tailgate. i want to put a different tailgate on my car. i have access to a rust free '93 wagon and its tailgate. is it compatible with my '87? the window, brake light, and wiper sprayer are all a little different, but the overall shape and the hinges and all that stuff sure look the same. it appears like i would need to re-route the wiper sprayer line, but otherwise a straight forward swap. anybody know?
