power failure 200 1986

I bought a 1986 volvo 240 off my brother. It was running great untill last night. I was
driving down the road at about 50 and the whole thing just died the
lights died there was no power and the engin died. I brought it to a
stop turned it over and nothing happened. I flagged someone down and we
put jumpers on it and wihtout the key in it the dash lights were flashing
and the gauges were jumping up and down. Well i got it towed to my
house. This morning i went outside and it turned over and it tired to
start but couldn't. I tried again and nothing happened so i turned the
key back and took it out but it continued to turn itself over and wouldnt'
stop. It finally did. I have no idea what is wrong with it and i really
need some help. Any help would be great
