service and engine light on 200 1990

Hi all.

WE have 90 245 with 104xx miles and the service light was on first. I figured the it was time for an oil change which i will do this weekend but now the engine light come on and stays on. The service light will eventually go off in about 10 minutes or so but the engine light does not. The car is drivable but i don't want to go to far just in case it shuts down. It is brutally cold in Chicago. I wanted to get some ideas/comments as to why this is happening before i take the car to our indy volvo mechanic. Thanks for the replies.
