This morning I test-drove a 1986 245GL with 125,000 on a transplanted (not Rebuilt) motor in Kansas City.
There was some sludge visible when you looked in the oil cap.
The tyranny fluid was brown and not cherry.
The steering rack was missing a boot and had a noticeable tick and made noise when turned that was medium loud.
The AC worked, along with most everything electrical.
The driver’s door handle was difficult to open.
The leather interior was "worn" but not trashed.
There were four rust spots that were the size of a 50-cent piece at each wheel well behind the tire. The engine compartment had evidence of many different fluids.
The radiator looked like it was a Junk Yard swap out on its last legs.
Driver’s door pocket was shattered.
The body was missing the lower trim piece that goes below the doors.
In place of the rear speakers were holes.
The windshield had 25-cent piece rust at the lower corners.
Over all the paint was OK but nothing stellar.
The body had a few small dings.
The engine fumbled and hesitated on acceleration twice during the test.
The tachometer didn’t work and the seat heaters didn’t either.
The odometer worked.
The wiring harness looked good.
The exhaust looked “mid-Life.”
Upsides were the windows were tinted and it had a cheap CD player.
The seller asked $2450.
KBB says $2000 for this car in excellent shape.
I offered $1800 cash. What do you think? Did I make a fair offer?
Thanks.
