How much is too much? 200 1989

I went to test a new taillight assembly gasket for leakage. I used a hose and directly aimed the water jet around the assembly. Would it be fair to say that some droplets of water -should- be seeping into the trunk? I would assume that the gasket can only protect so much, and it probably became too saturated and allowed some water in... or

Should the gasket not be allowing any water in at all?
