gearstick trouble 140-160

I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem as im having now. ive put in a new engine and transmission in my 72 164E and am having trouble putting the gear selector linkage back on the auto transmission it just doesnt seem to line up. Do i need a new linkage or is there some sort of adjustment i can do.
