740 overheating up the hill 700

Help! My 1987 740 Gl (200000 miles) barely can do it up the hill, and overheats. When I stop, I can see it, and the expansion tank in trouble also. But I don't have any warning on board! Otherwise, it's running smooth on the highway or in the city. The hill is the problem. Could someone tell me what's wrong?
