Water pump problems continue-what do I do next? 200 1985

A couple of nights ago I installed a new GMB water pump on my 1985 DL but noticed I had some coolant leaking from the pump. I did check the mounting surface to make sure it was smooth and clean before I installed the pump.

I then worked my way back to the pump and tightened the bolts more snug and decided to wait until tonight to refill and test. By the way, I did pry up the pump to make sure the top seal was under compression when I first installed the pump.

The same thing happened tonight. When I started to pour the coolant into the reservoir, I saw a little leakage from the top seal. I took it out for a ride anyhow and when I got back I didn't notice the leakage from the top seal. I waited an hour, went and looked again and saw about 1/4 cup of coolant in the catch pan. So I removed the shroud, fan, pulley, and top timing belt cover to get a better look at the pump but couldn't find any coolant on the pump.

I then tightened the waterpump bolts a little more and noticed leakage from the top seal so I backed off a bit aand worked my way around the other bolts and tightened them about 1/8 turn. Put everything back together, took it for a 15 minute drive and of course I noticed leakage when I got back. I think it is coming from the top seal but can't be sure. I looked underneath the car and see coolant on the bottom of the alternator but it seems more is coming off the back side of the steel cross member.

I don't know what I should do next.

1. Drain the coolant remove the water pump, reinstall with a new gasket. My former mechanic said it isn't necessary to use silicone and I've done it before without and had no problems.

2. Get a Volvo water pump.

3. Get a torque wrench and tighten each bolt to the 16 ft/lb spec. That spec seems a bit much to me. I think I have the bolts good and snug but maybe that is not enough.

Your comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Excuse me for the long story but I am getting frustrated.
