Total piece of cake. Wal Mart sells this spout with a long tube that screws on to both large and small mouth oil bottles and has a open/closed valve in it. For two bucks it was worth a try.
I drained the old lube, pulled the cover plate off the OD and cleaned the screen then with a new gasket buttoned it back up. With the Wal Mart device I could lay under the car and hold the oil bottle up near the starter while it drained into the gearbox. Just squeezing it to help it along. 1/2 qt of type F ATF and a couple of quarts of Mobil 1 5W30. Shifting was marginally better but I'll give it a while to work through.
On the negative side was the 1/8" piece of a corner of a gear that was hanging on the magnetic drain plug. About the size of fat grain of rice. No mistaking what it was. The corner of a tooth. Oh well, maybe it's been this way for years. (hopefull) I think I'll pick up a salvage M46 to play with when the cash is available.
