960 Poor gas mileage 900 1995

My 95' 964 with 125k runs great but have noticed the gas mileage drop down considerably. Used to get btwn 20-24mpg. Now get between 16-17 mpg in mixed use driving (mostly hiway). I've noticed dark soot build up in the tailpipe and was wondering if it meant the engine's running too rich.

I am suspecting my 02 sensor may be going bad but no check engine light on.

Will the check engine light surely go on if gone bad or on it's way out?

I just figured with 125k it may be time to replace them.

By the way, recently replaced spark plugs with Bosch Platinum Plus4.
