Transmission Fluid: What's the Difference between Type F and Dexron III 200

The 240s are peculiar in that they use Type F, whereas most other cars use Dexron III. No one can tell me what the difference is. Also, why do Volvos use Type F? What happens if you use Dexron III in the tranny? And does anyone know the history of the development of these two types of fluid?
