Seat belt retractors... How to unwind? 700 1988

I'm putting the front seats back in my '88 745t and find that the seat belt retractors that bolt to the seat base have pulled up all the slack and won't allow the belts to pull out.

How do I release them? There's barely enough slack in the belt to bolt the assembly back to the seat without pulling the remaining belt out of the B pillar.

Any help appreciated as I'd like to finish this tonight.
