Well, I finished installing three new front seals, new timing belt and tensioner, and new water pump. The car starts up and seems to run fine, but it has a new noise that wasn't there before. Right away it had a grinding, dry-bearing sort of noise that went away after maybe 10 seconds. The funny noise that remains is sort of a whine, and when I give it short low revs it sounds kind of like a siren on a police car out of the 50's. It's not super loud, but definitely wasn't there before and doesn't sound right. I'm wondering if it might be a bad tensioner (Scan Tech, Germany) or possibly a bad water pump (Hepu). Could it be one of these? Which would be the most likely culprit? Any other ideas? I'm quite sure I didn't leave any parts floating around behind the timing cover. I read about some disasters on the FAQ and went very slowly and carefully on this. Any help would be appreciated. The old tensioner spins fast and freely. I replaced it because it made a little noise when I spun it, and I don't know how old it is. Maybe I should have left it in. Other than this, the job went fine.
