must I replace my rack (steering)? 200

Went to a repair shop today to find the source of my power steering fluid leak. I was told that the front driver's side rack needs to be replaced and that it would cost $800 for a re-build job. MY questions are Do I NEED to make this repair? How long can I drive before I amke this repair? Is there a safety hazzard in driving with this condition. Other than leaking fluid the power steering is showing no signs of problems the steering and handling of the car all seem to be normal. YOur collective wisdom would be most appreciated on this problem
