I have seen many cries for help with mysterious and intermittent stalls. I just battled through with these problems, so I thought I could share with you guys my experience and solution.
My 90 240 wagon began stalling intermittently, at first there was some wild bucking and hesistation. Each time, she stalls, I would wait and restart later.
I changed fuel pump relay and no improvement.
I changed the main fuel pump, and things got better until about 500 miles later. She was stalling again, though this time there was no bucking, it would just miss a beat and hesistate, followed by stalling. Prompt restart.
So I changed transfer pump, the small hose for the transfer pump, fuel filter, RMP sensor.
No improvment.
I was pissed. Really, really pissed.
Ran the wagon with out AMM, and problem was still there.
Then I changed the 25 amp fuse holder and ignition control until (referred to as the power stage in Bentley, only $30 bucks , $70 for the Bosch though)
Problem solved.
So for those of you suffering from the same problems looking into the 25 amp fuse and power stage (only 89 and later models, pre 89 models check the hall sensor).
At one point I was so desperate that I contemplated changing the ECU.
Good luck,
