No AM Reception in 945 Need Aftermarket Antenna?? 900

About six months ago I had an aftermarket Pioneer CD receiver installed in my 93 945. I then added four new door speakers. CD's and FM sound excellent. There is no AM...except for faint reception if I'm smack in the city where it is broadcast from....across the street from the stations tower!

I have the interior rear window antenna and I believe somewhere along the line that is the culprit. What are my options? Replace with an external antenna and if so would I have to run a whole new antenna lead all the way from the head unit? Or is there something I can do to correct the exsiting setup?
