Help 91 240 coolant temp guage erratic operation 200

Coolant temp guage needle is normally at half way mark (9 o'clock) and hardly moves. In last 6 weeks, about 10 times, the needle suddenly rises and stops about 1/8" short of red zone. It stays there for a few minutes and then mysteriously rapidly falls back to 9 o'clock position.

First happened on freeway about 75mph with AC on. Shut off AC and slowed to 65..in a few minutes, needle was mid range again. It started occuring more often. Changed thermostat last night thinking..maybe?

Today during a freeway drive to Miami in 80 degree weather, at 80mph with AC on for first hour then needle suddenly popped up there. shut off AC and slowed, needle returned to half way mark. It even did it today without the AC running.

It may be coincidence but I noticed it twice returned to normal position after I hit a small bump or rough spot in the road (loose connection?).

Today I even banged the fuse box cover and it popped back down to normal.

Any suggestions or advice?
