1981 242 CamGear Steering Rack: I replaced both tie rod ends and the right inner tie rod and both boots and took the car in for an alignment. Since then it has pulled mildly but surely to the left. I took it back and the mechanic looked at the printout from the alignment and said it looked good. We traded front tires and it still pulled to the left. So he jacked up the front end off the ground and started the car while watching the steering wheel and the steering wheel jerked a little to the left and tends to very very slowly work its way left. Sometimes, once its running, it sits still, but if it moves, its always left. At start up it gives a quick jerk left that is easily observed. The front-end mechanic says I have a power steering pull and that something in the steering system is messed up.
Could I have screwed something up installing the inner tie rod end? This rack takes a tie rod that locks on by peening. When I peened it, I was very careful to support the steering shaft securely from underneath.
I was planning on flushing the system so I guess I'll go ahead with that.
Opinions? Do you think I bent something inside the rack? Any ideas or remedies?
