relays. . . a 'how do they work so i don't set the car on fire?' type question) 200 1987

Here's the background: fog lights going in tomorrow. have all the parts, OE switch, POS switch that came with the kit, etc.

i laid out all of the wire from the kit tonight, and decided where i'm going to put everything. i'm just wondering about how to wire the relay. my understanding of a relay is that it's a switch operated by electricity. (this statement should show you that i know enough about electricity to not hurt myself, but not enough to use big words.) is that sufficient understanding of a relay? am i missing anything? i was figuring that the circuit that is operating the swtich (swith in the relay, that is) would come from the switch (that i push to turn the lights on), and then be routed to ground. will this cause any problems? the other two connectors on the relay (those that are being switched) will come from the battery and go to the lights.

ok, i just read the post over and it's starting to not make sense to me. feel free to reply and ask me what the hell i'm talking about. i'm going to go have another beer.
