SU-HS6 Tuning problems 140-160

Hello,
I am trying to tune my SU-HS6's and can not seem to get a good even tone from the exhaust.
They are on a 71 164, the needle type is SM and the carbs are brand new from ZTherapy.
I have a constant smell of unburned fuel on start up and Idle, I have used the Colortune kit and had the correct Blue color, but the car Died after the throttle was opened up, and did not start again until I changed the mixture completly. I removed plugs 1,2 and3 and found dry black soot deposits and on plugs 4,5 and 6 the plugs are showing overheating to normal color. This has been the case before with different SU-HS6's.
I have some light grey smoke at start up(virtualy clear) then it is gone.
Are these the needles I should use or should I use the KD needles.
Thanks for any advice,
Tim
